Article I:
Name and Purpose
Section 1: The name of this chapter shall be the Oasis High School Chapter of the National Honor Society, which appears on the charter granted by the National Council of the National Honor Society, duly signed by the members of the National Council.
Section 2: The object of this chapter shall be to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, to lead by example, and to encourage the development of character in all students of Oasis High School.
Article II:
The Principal
Section 1: The principal shall reserve the right to approve all activities and decisions of the chapter.
Section 2: The principal shall be a part of the final appeal process for non-selection or dismissal cases.
Article III:
NHS Advisor
Section 1: The chapter advisor shall be responsible for the direct, day-to-day supervision of the chapter and act as liaison between faculty, administration, students, and community.
Section 2: The chapter advisor shall maintain files on membership, chapter history, activities and financial transactions. The chapter advisor shall send the annual report to the national office.
Section 3: The chapter advisor shall regularly review each member for compliance with society standards and obligations including GPA requirements.
Section 4: The chapter adviser shall help the chapter officers understand and carry out their duties.
Article IV:
Selection Committee/Faculty Council
Section 1: The faculty council shall consist of 5 voting staff members appointed by the chapter advisor.
Section 2: The chapter advisor shall be a voting member of the faculty council.
Section 3: The faculty council shall meet at least once a year to select members, to consider non-selection, dismissal, other disciplinary actions, and warning cases.
Article V:
Selection of Members
Section 1: The selection of members to this chapter of the National Honor Society shall be by a majority vote of the faculty council. The decisions of the faculty council are subject to the review of the principal.
Section 2: Prerequisites for selection into NHS include:
• Students must be a in their eleventh or twelfth year of school;
• Students must have a weighted cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 4.0 or a un-weighted cumulative GPA of 3.5;
• Students must demonstrate their leadership and character qualities through written essays and character references;
• Students must demonstrate their commitment to service by obtaining written verification of service hours from advisors;
• Students must meet all NHS deadlines for applications, resumes and essays;
• Students must not have had any major disciplinary action taken against them such as, but not limited to, suspensions, cheating or violations of the Oasis High School Drug and Alcohol Policy outlined within the Student Code of Conduct.
Students will be evaluated by a faculty council comprised of Oasis High School faculty and/or staff and the NHS advisor.
Section 3: The selection process into NHS is as follows:
• The faculty council will meet and vote on candidates on service, leadership, character and discipline record. Each category can receive a maximum score of five points;
• A five point scale will be used for the assessment of each candidate, with a score zero meaning non-existent or very poor, and a score five meaning exemplary;
• Candidates who receive an average score of 15 or more, will be accepted as an National Honor Society inductee.
Section 4: The advisor will send a letter home with all candidates informing them of their acceptance or rejection into the National Honor Society.
Section 5: Advisor will meet with inductees to explain dues ($15), induction ceremony, and expectations for ceremony. All inductees are required to participate in the induction ceremony. Induction ceremonies will be held at the end of the school year.
Section 6: Once selected for membership all candidates and their parents must sign a contract stating that they accept and will maintain the standards of NHS in all 4 areas; academics, character, leadership, and service.
Section 7: Eligibility for selection and continued membership is based on compliance with civil and school regulations. Consideration is given to the qualities of honesty, reliability, integrity, cooperation, courtesy, determination, respect, and concern for others.
Section 8: All academically eligible students must submit a completed National Honor Society application packet (including all forms, essays and recommendations). Applications will be completed online using Google Forms (you must use your OHS email address).
Section 9: All members must attend the induction ceremony to be inducted into and remain members of the Oasis High School Chapter of the National Honor Society. All members are required to attend the induction ceremony the following year to welcome new members.
Article VI
Membership
Section 1: Membership in this chapter is an honor given to students of the eleventh and twelfth grade. Eleven and twelfth grade students may apply at the beginning of the second quarter. Selection for membership is made by the faculty council and is based upon outstanding scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Once selected, members have the responsibility to continue to uphold these qualities. Sophomores may apply at the beginning of the fourth quarter of the school year. Applications will be available in the front office.
Section 2: Membership of this chapter shall be known as active and graduate. Active members become graduate members at graduation. The graduate members have no voice or vote in chapter affairs.
Section 3: Candidates shall have attended at least one semester at Oasis High School and shall be members of the eleventh or twelfth year class (the faculty council may waive the semester ruling on the basis of a recommendation from the student’s previous principal or NHS advisor).
Section 4: Transferring candidates who are coming to the OHS chapter of NHS from a previous chapter are still required to meet all standards of the OHS chapter within a 9 week period. (A copy of their NHS Certification from their previous chapter is required to waive the admission requirements into the OHS chapter of NHS).
Section 5: Members are expected to participate in a set minimum of two National Honor Society group activities per semester. Participation in activities that take place on school grounds, after the school day’s end is expected.
Section 6: Members must attend all meetings. Members are allowed ONE unexcused absence. The following are reasons for excused absences.
Section 7: The annual dues for each member shall be $15.00. The amount is subject to approval by the faculty council.
Article VII
Honor Cords and Regalia
Section 1: To receive an honor cord to wear at graduation is an honor bestowed upon National Honor Society members who have been active in the chapter and have shown a commitment towards service in school and the community.
Section 2: Members need to fulfill all membership requirements (refer to Article V above) to receive an honor cord.
Section 3: Members who are on probation or have not turned in their service projects by April 22, 2016 are not eligible to receive an honor cord.
Section 4: Honor cords will be distributed prior to graduation.
Article VIII
Induction Ceremony
Section 1: The advisor will form committees for ceremony preparation.
Section 2: Each member is required to be involved in ceremony preparation.
Section 3: All members are required to attend the induction ceremony.
Article IX
Dismissal
Section 1: The Faculty Council, in compliance with the rules and regulations of the National Honor Society, shall determine the procedure for dismissal. A written description of the dismissal procedure shall be available to interested parties.
Section 2: Members who fall below the standards that were the basis for their selection shall be promptly warned in writing by the chapter adviser and given a reasonable amount of time to correct the deficiency, except that in the case of flagrant violation of school rules or the law, a member does not have to be warned. Students will be given one (1) semester to improve their GPA.
Section 3: In all cases of pending dismissal, a member shall have a right to a hearing before the Faculty Council.
Section 4: For purposes of dismissal, a majority vote of the Faculty Council is required.
Section 5: A member who has been dismissed may appeal the decision of the Faculty Council to the principal.
Section 6: NASSP shall hear no appeals in dismissal cases. The principal shall have the final word in appeal cases.
Article X
Probation
Section 1: Reasons for probation are, but not limited to:
• Not maintaining a weighted cumulative GPA of 3.5 or a un-weighted cumulative GPA of 3.25;
• Not complying with school rules and policies;
• Not upholding the standards of leadership and character that were used as a basis for selection;
• Not holding regular attendance to member and/or officer meetings;
• Not regularly participating in service projects and activities, including not meeting the two group activities per semester requirement.
Section 2: Advisor will document reason(s) for probation and member will be put on probation for one semester.
Section 3: Member will receive written notice of his/her probation within 2 days of the decision. While on probation, member is required to participate in all NHS activities and meetings.
Section 4: While on probation, if member commits another or the same offense against the NHS Constitution and/or bylaws, then action for dismissal will be taken to the faculty council.
Article XI
Officers
Section 1: There will be five positions of office in this chapter elected by the incoming and current class of the National Honor Society. The positions available shall be President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Historian.
Section 2: All returning members are eligible to run for a position as an officer.
Section 3: A majority of votes will be necessary to elect any officer of this chapter.
Section 4: An officer can be removed from their position if they are not performing the duties as defined by NHS in Appendix D.
Article XII
Meetings
Section 1: Meetings will be held one Wednesday of every month, or two Wednesdays of every month for officers. See Appendix E for a complete list of meeting dates for the 2014-2015 school year. Meeting dates are tentative and subject to change at any point. Meeting dates can also be added to the list, in which attendance is required, if necessary.
Section 2: The officers of the chapter for the next year shall be elected at the last regular meeting of the previous school year.
Section 3: Special meetings approved by the executive committee may be called.
Section 4: All meetings shall be open meetings and shall be held under the guidance of the chapter advisors. Information may also be disseminated to members through email and the group Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/officialohsnhs/).
Section 5: All members must regularly attend meetings and participate in activities sponsored by the Oasis High School chapter of the National Honor Society or obtain a waiver from an advisor. Irregular attendance and participation can be cause for dismissal.
Article XIII
Activities
Section 1: The primary service of the Oasis High School chapter of the National Honor Society shall be determined by the incoming class of National Honor Society Members. The chapter may determine one or more service projects for each year.
Section 2: All members shall regularly participate in these projects. All members are required to complete a total of 20 community service hours per year. Any community service done in association with the Oasis High School chapter can be signed off by only Mrs. Cannon. You must turn in one copy of community service to Mrs. Cannon and one copy must be turned into the front office.
Section 3: All members shall participate in a minimum of two group events per semester. Failure to do so will result in probation.
Section 3: These projects shall have the following characteristics: fulfill a need within the school or community; have the support of the administration and the faculty; be appropriate and educationally defensible; and be well planned, organized, and executed
Article XIV
Official Insignia
Section 1: Each active, graduate, or honorary member of this chapter shall be entitled to wear the emblem selected by the National Council.
Section 2: Any member who resigns or is dismissed from the chapter shall return the emblem to the faculty advisors.
Section 3: Each member agrees that, whether the emblem comes to him/her as a gift, a personal purchase, an award, or from whatever source, the title to the emblem shall rest with the chapter of which he/she is a member; and, therefore, the emblem can, on motion of the council, be commandeered. Furthermore, each member agrees that his/her acceptance of the emblem shall be considered affirmation of this stipulation in regard to the title of the emblem.
Section 4: All insignia must be procured from the National Association of Secondary School Principals, 1904 Association Drive, Reston, Virginia 22091. All insignia are registered in the United States Patent Office and may not be copied by anyone.
Section 5: The official colors of the National Honor Society are blue and gold.
Article XV
Amendments
Section 1: These by-laws may be amended by a majority vote of the chapter, provided that the proposed amendment has been approved by the faculty council, principal, and moderators.
Appendix A
NHS Benefits of Membership and Admission Application
Benefits of Membership...
“College admissions officers often look for Honor Society membership as a valid indicator that the applicant will succeed at the collegiate level of post-secondary education. The Honor Society member has already proven that he or she is able to achieve with academic endeavors, leadership, honorable, and admirable character, as well as service that demonstrates that the member is willing to use talents and skills for the improvement of society.” -National Honor Society Handbook
Becoming a Member...
Students who wish to become a member can effectively increase their chances of being selected by adhering to the following suggestions:
I. Maintain high academic standards at school.
II. Challenge themselves by taking advanced level courses.
III. Become a meaningful part of several high school extra-curricular groups. Athletic participation is equally important, but a commitment to community service must be a evident.
IV. Seek opportunities for leadership by running for offices, chairing committees, using leadership skills in the classroom, etc.
V. Maintain high moral and ethical standards at school and in the community. Be aware that cheating on tests, sharing homework, skipping class, etc is often noted by teachers and may be brought up during the selection process.
VI. Take part in community and church activities, all these volunteer opportunities can be written in on a resumé or application for NHS.
VII. Seek opportunities to serve. Tutoring a student in need, helping on a volunteer basis at a retirement home, babysitting, raking leaves for the elderly, working at the public library, etc.
Qualifications and Selection Process
Membership in the local chapter of NHS is an honor bestowed upon a student. Selection for membership is based upon the following criteria:
I. The student must have a 3.25 un-weighted or a 3.5 weighted overall GPA to be eligible academically, must be a member of eleventh or twelfth grade and must have been in attendance at Oasis High School for at least one full semester immediately prior to the invitation. (Unless previously a member in good standing at another school or your former principal writes a letter of recommendation, then this rule can be waived).
II. All eligible students will be issued an invitation to fill out an application for membership (forms, essay and resume). The application is not a guarantee of membership and must be returned to the advisor by the stated deadline. Members are cautioned to fill out the entire application neatly in ink or typeface. Incomplete, messy, or incorrect applications may affect the committee’s decision. Applications received after the deadline are not eligible for the selection process.
III. A faculty committee will next review all applications that are returned by the deadline and will reserve the right to award membership based upon their assessments of the applicant’s commitment to service, leadership, and character. If necessary, disciplinary records will be consulted and additional faculty members may be contacted.
Candidates will be notified of their selection by letter. At this point in time candidates may choose to decline membership, however this is the final opportunity.

Appendix D
NHS Officer Duties and Responsibilities
President:
It shall be the duty of the President to preside at the meetings of the chapter, organize NHS projects, and fulfill all tasks designated by the advisor.
Vice President of Group Events:
The Vice President shall preside over the meetings in the absence of the President, assist the President in NHS tasks, and fulfill all tasks designated by the advisor. As director of group projects, it is your responsibility to arrange group service projects and form a committee to write the annual report to be sent to the national headquarters.
Vice President of Individual Events:
The Vice President shall preside over the meetings in the absence of the President, assist the President in NHS tasks, and fulfill all tasks designated by the advisor. As director of individual projects, it is your responsibility to monitor member’s individual service projects and coordinate when presentations will be made.
Secretary:
The Secretary shall take the minutes of the meetings of the chapter, keep record of attendance, keep a record of all business, hold all records on file, type up notices for meetings and projects, and fulfill all tasks designated by the advisor.
Treasurer:
The Treasurer shall receive and disperse all funds of the chapter and keep an accurate account of receipts and disbursements in accordance with school regulations. The Treasurer will make a biannual report to the members.
Historian:
The Historian shall aid the secretary in press, publicity and photography tasks. And assure that there is a collection of photographs of NHS activities for the OHS yearbook, school bulletin boards and press releases.

Any community service done in association with the Oasis High School chapter can be signed off by only Mrs. Cannon. You must turn in one copy of community service to Mrs. Cannon and one copy must be turned into the front office.
Section 3: All members shall participate in a minimum of two group events per semester. Failure to do so will result in probation.
Section 3: These projects shall have the following characteristics: fulfill a need within the school or community; have the support of the administration and the faculty; be appropriate and educationally defensible; and be well planned, organized, and executed
Article XIV
Official Insignia
Section 1: Each active, graduate, or honorary member of this chapter shall be entitled to wear the emblem selected by the National Council.
Section 2: Any member who resigns or is dismissed from the chapter shall return the emblem to the faculty advisors.
Section 3: Each member agrees that, whether the emblem comes to him/her as a gift, a personal purchase, an award, or from whatever source, the title to the emblem shall rest with the chapter of which he/she is a member; and, therefore, the emblem can, on motion of the council, be commandeered. Furthermore, each member agrees that his/her acceptance of the emblem shall be considered affirmation of this stipulation in regard to the title of the emblem.
Section 4: All insignia must be procured from the National Association of Secondary School Principals, 1904 Association Drive, Reston, Virginia 22091. All insignia are registered in the United States Patent Office and may not be copied by anyone.
Section 5: The official colors of the National Honor Society are blue and gold.
Article XV
Amendments
Section 1: These by-laws may be amended by a majority vote of the chapter, provided that the proposed amendment has been approved by the faculty council, principal, and moderators.

NHS Benefits of Membership and Admission Application

“College admissions officers often look for Honor Society membership as a valid indicator that the applicant will succeed at the collegiate level of post-secondary education. The Honor Society member has already proven that he or she is able to achieve with academic endeavors, leadership, honorable, and admirable character, as well as service that demonstrates that the member is willing to use talents and skills for the improvement of society.” -National Honor Society Handbook
Becoming a Member...
Students who wish to become a member can effectively increase their chances of being selected by adhering to the following suggestions:
I. Maintain high academic standards at school.
II. Challenge themselves by taking advanced level courses.
III. Become a meaningful part of several high school extra-curricular groups. Athletic participation is equally important, but a commitment to community service must be a evident.
IV. Seek opportunities for leadership by running for offices, chairing committees, using leadership skills in the classroom, etc.
V. Maintain high moral and ethical standards at school and in the community. Be aware that cheating on tests, sharing homework, skipping class, etc is often noted by teachers and may be brought up during the selection process.
VI. Take part in community and church activities, all these volunteer opportunities can be written in on a resumé or application for NHS.
VII. Seek opportunities to serve. Tutoring a student in need, helping on a volunteer basis at a retirement home, babysitting, raking leaves for the elderly, working at the public library, etc.
Qualifications and Selection Process
Membership in the local chapter of NHS is an honor bestowed upon a student. Selection for membership is based upon the following criteria:
I. The student must have a 3.25 un-weighted or a 3.5 weighted overall GPA to be eligible academically, must be a member of eleventh or twelfth grade and must have been in attendance at Oasis High School for at least one full semester immediately prior to the invitation. (Unless previously a member in good standing at another school or your former principal writes a letter of recommendation, then this rule can be waived).
II. All eligible students will be issued an invitation to fill out an application for membership (forms, essay and resume). The application is not a guarantee of membership and must be returned to the advisor by the stated deadline. Members are cautioned to fill out the entire application neatly in ink or typeface. Incomplete, messy, or incorrect applications may affect the committee’s decision. Applications received after the deadline are not eligible for the selection process.
III. A faculty committee will next review all applications that are returned by the deadline and will reserve the right to award membership based upon their assessments of the applicant’s commitment to service, leadership, and character. If necessary, disciplinary records will be consulted and additional faculty members may be contacted.
Candidates will be notified of their selection by letter. At this point in time candidates may choose to decline membership, however this is the final opportunity.

Appendix D
NHS Officer Duties and Responsibilities
President:
It shall be the duty of the President to preside at the meetings of the chapter, organize NHS projects, and fulfill all tasks designated by the advisor.
Vice President of Group Events:
The Vice President shall preside over the meetings in the absence of the President, assist the President in NHS tasks, and fulfill all tasks designated by the advisor. As director of group projects, it is your responsibility to arrange group service projects and form a committee to write the annual report to be sent to the national headquarters.
Vice President of Individual Events:
The Vice President shall preside over the meetings in the absence of the President, assist the President in NHS tasks, and fulfill all tasks designated by the advisor. As director of individual projects, it is your responsibility to monitor member’s individual service projects and coordinate when presentations will be made.
Secretary:
The Secretary shall take the minutes of the meetings of the chapter, keep record of attendance, keep a record of all business, hold all records on file, type up notices for meetings and projects, and fulfill all tasks designated by the advisor.
Treasurer:
The Treasurer shall receive and disperse all funds of the chapter and keep an accurate account of receipts and disbursements in accordance with school regulations. The Treasurer will make a biannual report to the members.
Historian:
The Historian shall aid the secretary in press, publicity and photography tasks. And assure that there is a collection of photographs of NHS activities for the OHS yearbook, school bulletin boards and press releases.
